The city was once a neighborhood of Aquidauana on the left bank of the river of the same name, gaining political autonomy in 1965. For this reason, it shares its history and culture with Aquidauana. Its main tourist attraction is Porto Canuto, where the famous episode of the Retirada da Laguna (Laguna Retreat) came to an end. Located on the edge of the BR-262, 125 km from Campo Grande, the city is also accessible via the beautiful and scenic Piraputanga Park Road, where ecotourism, adventure tourism, birdwatching, and regional gastronomy can be enjoyed
